I know a lot of women who read what is called "Inspirational Fiction" which are basically Christian romance novels. Friends keep recommending different books to me. I didn't want to make a judgement on the genre without researching, so I read a couple of books by different authors.

What do you guys think about those kind of books? Do you read them? Do your mothers read them? Do you think as a whole they represent Godly relationships?

hm........ I dont tend to read too many romance novels cuz it gives me a false impression of love.
but Christian romance novels, at least when you read them, there's no chance of it going into major description of stuff you "shouldnt be reading" lol
I think Christian romance novels are fine, especially if the centre the relationships around God. Just dont get so absorbed in them that you live your own life as a romance novel lol :D

Turn up the music
Turn it up loud
Take a few chances
Let it all out
'Cause you won't regret it
Lookin' back from where you have been
'Cause it's not who you knew
And it's not what you did
It's how you live

Yeah, mum always tells me to steer clear of any of those 'mills and boon' novels because they are so false. Also the soapies, because they are just as false! But I like Janette Oke's books, they are romantic without all the details. Like they mention a kiss, but don't go on to describe how it felt to the characters.
But yeah, don't expect your life to be like the novels. They're made up by someone who wants their life to be like that!

God Can.

Being a romantic at heart, and a total bookworm, my favorite books are the "romance christian fiction". I love it mostly because the characters of the books either have a relationship with God or come to find Him in the end, and the romance in it. lol. My favorites include Dee Henderson, Lori Wick, Francine Rivers, and Karen Kingsbury. BTW, if you really like some suspense while reading a great christian romance, i highly recommend Dee Henderson; and if you like some light-hearted romance, not too deep, Lori Wick. Francine Rivers and Karen Kingsbury go a little deeper into some issues and relationships, but I always usually like the outcome. So yeah, haha.

Oh wow. I have to agree that sometimes the two characters that are the focus of romance can "fall in love" rather quickly, but, and no disrespect to your mother, I find that most of the christian romance books i've read have not been "rushed" with the romance. In a "The O'Malley series", the characters meet, attraction sparks, they date, and they get married a few books later. Of course they build a Christ-centered relationship first. There are some by Karen Kingsbury in which a couple tries to work out a failing marriage, and I love those too. In The Mark of the Lion trilogy, the two main characters love each other very much, but because the guy isn't a Christian, it complicates things for the girl, who is also a slave in his family's household. Anyways they go through a lot, including being separated for a long time, but their love holds and i'm not going to give away the ending, but I loved the whole trilogy. What i'm trying to say is, not all of the christian romances are all that rushed, but those that are... well i try to give them the benefit of the doubt.

My best friend really enjoys Jane Austen novels and movies, but not much else. It's kind of different than what Nicole said though because they all take place in (I hope I picked the right time period) 18th century England and they had much different practices than we have now regarding dating (or rather courting) and marriage.

She also told me that she read somewhere that the romance novels of today are basically porn for girls.

uhhhh... yeah, i have to slightly agree with the 'porn for girls' thing with the romance novels of today. I couldn't say much because i've never picked up a non-christian romance novel, at least to read. I've wandered into that particular section a few times at Barnes and Noble and have not wanted to pick up one to read-awkward and "yuck", i'd rather not have to imagine and sensor everything in it. *cough cough* I keep myself in the Christian fiction section and i love picking up a good mystery or suspense novel in that area too.

yeah and you can't just push the remote in your head to "next chapter" or "fast forward". your hands just keep flipping the pages and your mind keeps eating it up. garbage in, garbage out, as they say. ugh.

Shaunti has a couple of "inspirational fiction" novels.  The first one is called "The Veritas Conflict," which is loosely based on her time at Harvard and the spiritual warfare that went on there, and the other one is "The Lights of Tenth Street," which is about a young woman caught in the sex industry and a Christian family's efforts to save her, and also save the husband from a porn addiction.  It's the first book of Shaunti's I ever read, and it was what eventually developed a friendship between us.

Another great author is Lisa Samson.  She's a friend of mine and she has some GREAT books out there.  My favorite is "Songbird."  It's Christian fiction, minus the cheesy stuff.

Happy Reading,
Julie

Lol. Romance...i think it's a topic to be careful with. I am a romantic at heart (so yeah i swooned over Caleb's "good deeds" for his wife when he was actually doing it from the heart-from Fireproof) I love the Christian romances, next to that, suspense, and mystery and WWII based novels. (WWII is my fav historical event) But, yeah i've had to ask God to sharpen the "sensor" in my head that keeps me from absorbing all the garbage in some books. There are some scary stuff out there man.
